Adachi to Shimamura Season 2

Adachi to Shimamura Season 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to its previous seasons. Here is everything we know about the second season of this popular slice of life anime.

Adachi to Shimamura is yuri, a slice of life anime created by animation studio Tezuka Productions. It is based on the novels penned by Hitoma Iruma which follows Sakura Adachi, a high school girl who usually skips class and sits upstairs in the school gym to pass time and distract herself. She meets Hougetsu Shimamura, a girl who also skips class. They begin to play ping-pong, spend a lot of time together and become great friends. Eventually, they both decide to return to classes. Through these interactions, Adachi has trouble expressing her feelings to Shimamura, while Shimamura feels like Adachi is merely a friend to her.

Its first season concluded in October 2020 and since then fans have been wondering whether the anime will return for season 2.

In the case of anime, the possibility of a sequel usually depends on three factors which are:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

Now let me give you the information I found in 3 quick parts and tell you if you should expect Adachi to Shimamura Season 2 to get announced in 2022.

Let’s start with an in-depth examination of the source material.

Is there enough material available for Adachi to Shimamura Season 2?

Today most anime are adaptations of an already existing source material in the form of manga, light novels, games and such.

In the case of Adachi To Shimamura, the source material is a light novel. Now we have to check how many volumes are currently available and how many of them have been adapted in the previous season and if the series is still ongoing. An ongoing series will always have a higher chance of receiving a sequel similar to Redo of Healer Season 2.

Currently, there are nine light novel volumes of Adachi To Shimamura released in Japan. The light novel series by Rui Tsukiyo is still ongoing and a new volume is released every 6-8 months on average with the last one released on October 10, 2020. The active release of the novel is good news for the anime series. In addition to that, there is also a manga adaptation by Mani which is currently running in Square Enix’s Gangan Online Magazine since April 2016.

The first season of Adachi To Shimamura anime adapted the first four volumes which leave us with 5 volumes of content which is enough to create another 12-episode season,

Conclusion: there are currently 5 volumes are left to be adapted, so there is currently enough source material available for another one-cour season. The series is still ongoing, so that’s a big plus for a sequel chance as well.

Sales and Popularity

In this section, we will see if the anime was even profitable for the production committee or failed to even make up the production costs. For this, we will analyse its Blu-ray, DVD sale and light novel sales.

Before moving ahead you will need to understand that most of the anime today created are mostly produced to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case a light novel). Sales generated through the sales of the light novel and merch are their main source of income and the rest is treated as a side income in the form of advertiser fees, online streaming licencing, and Blu-ray.

Generally, a 12-episode anime television series like Adachi To Shimamura usually takes about $ 3,000,000 to produce.

Light Novel Sales

As of the latest Adachi To Shimamura has 500,000 copies in circulation. Since the airing of the anime, both the light novel and the manga grew in their popularity, leading to an increase in digital sales.

On average a light novel having 400,000 to 800,000 copies in circulation is considered a good sign. so it is certainly doing impressively in terms of light novel sales.

Adachi To Shimamura Blu-ray Sales

Disc sales are an important criterion for anime creators to earn financial income. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 5,000, a second season would be pretty promising.

In the case of Adachi To Shimamura, the Blu-ray DVD sales are looking quite optimistic. As reported by someanithing.com, the first Blu-ray/Dvd Disc volume which was released on December 2, 2020, sold a total of 1799 copies. The second was released on January 6, 2021, and sold 2343 copies and the last volume which went on sale on March 3, 2021, sold 2435 copies.

So a total of 7k units were sold which is quite impressive, considering there is also growing streaming and merch money coming from domestic and overseas companies like HiDive, BiliBli, in 2021.

Conclusion: the series certainly has made a lot of money since the anime has debuted, so profitability shouldn’t stand in the way of a sequel either. And I don’t see Kadokawa and the other members of the Adachi To Shimamura production committee losing money unless the popularity drops for the franchise.

Popularity of the series in Japan and in west

In this section, we will take a look at how popular this series is and how much the anime boosted its popularity. To do that, we will look at its official social media handles, MyAnimeList and other rankings, and how successful light novel is.

Light Novel

The Adachi To Shimamura was already quite popular among Yuri fans before the anime aired and its popularity increased a lot when the anime adaptation began. While the anime series was airing the light novel sales received a big boost where multiple volumes of it were ranked in the Top Ten of Oricon’s Weekly Sales charts. Moreover, since November, several volumes of the novel have received reprints.

Social Media

Their official Twitter handle has about 45.8k followers and is regularly updated from time to time. This directly shows how popular the series is in Japan who is the demographically targeted audience for its light novel and Blu-rays sales and accounts for almost 50% of revenue generated. Also in comparison, I am Standing on One Million Lives Twitter handle has over 30k followers and have already announced a season 2.

Rankings

On MyAnimeList, Adachi and Shimamura is ranked at #2999 with a rating of 7.15 with about 42k members. Meanwhile, on IMBD the series had received a rating of 6.1. Meanwhile, in Japan, the series was one the most watched anime of the Winter 2021 season ranking top on multiple streaming websites such as the D-Anime Store, AbemaTv. On NicoVideo, Japan’s own YouTube and the biggest video hosting site, episode 1 received a total of 449k views with 16k comments while the final episode reached 98k views and 18k comments. On D-Anime Store the last episode was watched by 8.5k people.

Conclusion: the series is fairly popular in both Japan and overseas so it won’t have any problem getting a second season.

So will There Be Adachi To Shimamura Season 2?

No official announcement for the second season has been made as of now, but, taking into account how popular the entire series has become after the anime aired, I think Adachi and Shimamura has an excellent chance of getting a second season.

There is enough source material available currently and the series has made tons of money from merch sales. If you ask me why it is taking so long for a sequel, it’s probably because all the studio is currently busy these days, including studio Tezuka Productions, where they are booked up to the next 2-3 years. The studio this year alone is working on How not to Summon a Demon Lord Season scheduled for Spring and Kanojo, Konojo for Summer. So even If the production committee did green-light a sequel in 2021 after the anime success, it would take a few years to announce next season.

Adachi To Shimamura Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?

Adachi To Shimamura is yet to be officially renewed for season 2, but if it does get a new season, then it most likely will air in late 2023 since season 1 aired from October 9, 2020, to December 25, 2020, and it usually takes around 1-2 years to create a new season.

As of now, no official announcements have been made yet, hence the readers need to keep in mind that these are just speculations. But, keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as something official is announced. We can expect the announcement in the next few months.

What to expect from season 2?

Since the first season covered the first four volumes, the second season will begin with adapting the fifth volume

Seven Seas Entertainment, the official English publisher of the novels describes the fifth volume as:

“Summer break is here, and Adachi’s determined to spend it with Shimamura. Unfortunately, Shimarmura’s old friend Tarumi has beaten her to the punch–as Adachi discovers when she catches the two of them together. Will this rude awakening give Adachi the push she needs to finally confess her feelings? And is Shimamura even ready to hear them if she does?”

This article will get updated again next year, and we will see if something perhaps changed. In the meantime, you can check out the latest updates on Tokyo Revengers Season 2 and Talentless Nana Season 2.

I hope this article helped you understand what are the chances that we will get the second season of Adachi To Shimamura.
