Call of the Night Season 2 is the anticipated sequel of the popular supernatural-romance anime which first premiered in the Summer of 2022. It has been a year since the first season ended and the viewers are still wondering if it will get a new season or not.

So here’s everything we know so far regarding whether or not Call of the Night Season 2 will happen in 2023, as well as the likely release date.

The Japanese anime Call of the Night also asYofukashi no Uta in short is an adaptation of the manga series created by Kotoyama.

The story follows Ko Yamori who suffers from insomnia and starts wandering the streets at night. One day he meets Nazuna Nanakusa, a vampire who shows him the joys of a nightwalker. This results in Ko also wanting to become a vampire as well.

Studio LidenFilms produced the anime’s first season, officially running for 12 episodes from July 8, 2022, to September 30, 2022, on various local networks in Japan.

HIDIVE streamed the anime outside of Japan with both sub and dub, and it received a positive reception from viewers and critics alike. Many praised its art and animation for its aesthetic look comparing it with the Monogatari series and loved the fresh take on the supernatural genre.

Overall it was considered a hit among the anime community.

Nazuna Nanakus The Night-Walker

As of May 2023, Call of the Night Season 2 doesn’t have a release date as it is not confirmed yet. However, if a new season is confirmed, it is likely to air sometime in mid-2024, or possibly in late-2024.

This is cause the first season premiered from July 2022 to September 2022 and it typically takes around 1-2 years to produce a new season.

As of now, no official announcements have been made yet, hence the readers need to keep in mind that these are just speculations.

But, keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as something official is announced. We can expect the announcement in the next few months.

Yofukashi no Uta Season 2 Countdown:

Based on the following information, here is the countdown to the premiere of Yofukashi no Utas second season.

Countdown

Will there be a Season 2 of Call of the Night?

As of writing, Studio LidenFilms, the publisher Shogakukan, or any other member of the production committee has not officially renewed the anime for a second season.

A lot of anime manage to get a new season right after the season finale but unfortunately, Yofukashi no Uta wasn’t one of them.

Production Studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal and it is possible to speculate whether an anime will get a new season or not by carefully evaluating these three factors:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

I have used the same method for Eminence in ShadowTakagi-san and World Trigger and so far it has proven to work.

So now we will examine these factors to see if Call of the Night anime will get a sequel or not.

Is there enough material available for “Call of the Night” Season 2?

Call of the Night source material status: Luckily we have enough source material for the next season
Call of the Night source material status: Luckily we have enough source material for the next season

Call of the Night anime is a direct adaptation of the manga series written and illustrated by Kotoyama.

It started publication in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in August 2019.

The first volume of the manga was released on November 18, 2019, and the latest volume came out on March 16, 2023.

A total of fifteen volumes have been released so far, and the manga is still ongoing.

The first season of the anime adapted the first 5 volumes leaving behind 10 volumes worth of content to adapt which is more than enough to create another 12-episode anime season.

Conclusion: Currently, there are 10 volumes of source material available to adapt, which is good news since the series has more than enough material for Studio Doga Kobo to start working on a new season right away.

Moreover, the series is still ongoing with a consistent release of new volumes, so that’s a big plus for getting a sequel.

Manga Sales and Profitability

Before we proceed, it’s important to understand that most of the anime we watch today are created primarily to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case manga).

Sales from the manga and related merchandise are the main source of income for the producers, while revenue from advertising fees, online streaming licensing, and Blu-ray sales are considered secondary

Typically, a 12-episode anime television series costs around $3,000,000 to produce.

Therefore, an anime has to make back this much money through merchandise sales and licensing fees to ensure a new season from the producers.

As of March 2023, Call of the Night had reached a circulation count of 4 million copies.

The anime has had a significant impact on the sales of the series, resulting in a major boost. Prior to the anime’s premiere in June 2022, the series had a cumulative total of 2.5 million copies in circulation.

However, as of March 2023, the number had increased to 4 million copies, an impressive jump of 1,500,000 copies within just nine months.

The manga’s success continues to this day. In its most recent volume release, the series achieved 8th place in the Weekly Best-selling chart with 46,206 copies sold in its first week. It ranked just between the immensely popular Kaiju No.8 and Oshi no Ko, an impressive accomplishment for a series with such a specific storyline.

Conclusion: typically, a romance manga with 500,000 to 1,000,000 copies in circulation is considered successful, so Call of the Night manga is performing remarkably well with these sales numbers.

Blu-ray/ DVDs and other Merchandise sales

While Blu-rays and DVDs are no longer key players in determining anime success as they used to be back in the 2010s, they are still a great tool to understand a show’s popularity among the general Japanese audience. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 3,000, a second season would be promising.

As for Call of the Night, the situation doesn’t look good.

The sales numbers for the first Blu-ray/DVD volume of Call of the Night were so low that it failed to even make it to Oricon’s Top 20 general category, selling below 1,000 copies.

However, it’s important to note that Blu-ray sales are no longer the only measure of a show’s success, as streaming fees have become a more significant factor in the industry.

Conclusion: Based on the sales numbers, it appears that the Call of the Night anime failed to generate a profit for its producers through the home video release, which is not a promising sign for the show’s future.

However, it is possible that the show managed to recoup its production costs through licensing fees and merchandise sales, so there may still be hope for its continuation.

Call of the Night’s Popularity in Japan and the West

Call of the Night is quite popular in both in Japan and the West
Call of the Night is quite popular in both in Japan and the West

The Call of the Night manga was already quite popular in Japan prior to the anime’s release, and its popularity has surged even further since then.

Manga’s Popularity

The series is one of the best-selling titles for Shogakukan with multiple volumes topping Oricon’s weekly and monthly sales charts. With an average of around 50,000 copies sold per volume and over 2.5 million copies sold before the anime’s premiere, this series has become a major success and was greenlit for an anime adaptation.

After the anime aired, the series experienced a surge in popularity and reached a cumulative total of 4 million copies sold.

The series has received numerous nominations and awards, including:

  • Winner of the 68th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category alongside Blue Orchestra
  •  Placed 7th in the 6th Next Manga Awards out of the 50 nominees with 15,134 votes
  • Ranked 8th on the “Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics of 2021” by the Honya Club website

Anime’s Popularity

The anime’s debut in Japan was highly anticipated, and it quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the Summer 2022 season. It ranked top on several streaming websites, including the D-Anime Store and AbemaTV and was one of the most-talked shows on Twitter.

The series was ranked #1 for three weeks in Anime Trending’s Top Anime of the Week chart. Additionally, both the male and female main characters also continued to appear on their best character rankings.

Overseas popularity

The debut run of the Yofukashi no Uta anime adaptation received a positive reception from fans in the West, with many viewers and critics praising it for being even better than the source material in some aspects.

The series has garnered positive reviews from viewers around the world, earning a solid score of 8.02 on MyAnimeList and ranking at #407 in popularity, but has a large with a large following of 493k members in its MAL group. This is more members than what some other anime which aired alongside it like Black Summoner, Isekai Ojisan and Harem In The Labyrinth Of Another World have.

It has also received an amazing score of 7.4/10 on IMDb and a 79% approval rating on AniList. This shows that the show’s popularity is very high even though it is a young series.

In conclusion, the series gained a significant following in both Japan and the West and generated a ton of revenue from merchandise sales, indicating that it has a strong and loyal fanbase.

With enough source material and the potential to make even more sales, it is inevitable that Call of the Night Season 2 will be announced soon. It is no longer a question of if it will get a new season, but when it will get a new season.

Call of the Night Season 2 Trailer

There is no trailer for Call of the Night Season 2 available yet to watch, but we will update this page if one gets released on their official youtube channel.

On the other hand, here’s a trailer for the first season, which you should watch to recall how wholesome the first one was.

What will happen in Call of the Night Season 2?

Since the first season covered the first five volumes, the next season of Call of the Night anime will begin with adapting the sixth volume which includes chapters 50 to 59.

Viz Media, the English distributor of the series describes the contents of the sixth volume as such:

“Nazuna is a vampire. That’s okay with human Ko. He wants to be one too. But transformation doesn’t come that easily…”

“Although Ko happily goes on a sightseeing trip to Tokyo with Nazuna, he tries to warn his childhood friend Mahiru about the dangers of dating vampire Kiku. And that’s before Ko learns a disturbing secret about her! Meanwhile, Detective Anko pursues one of Nazuna’s vampire friends with some stabby extralegal justice in mind.

To prevent Anko from exploiting their weaknesses, the gaggle of vampire women must delve deep into their pasts. Unfortunately, Nazuna can’t remember anything from her human life! Will a decades-old appointment card be the clue to finding out who “turned” Nazuna…and why?”

Final Words !!

In conclusion, there is a good chance that Call of the Night Season 2 will happen and we should hear some news about it this year. But don’t expect the release date for the second season to be before 2023 since it takes time for a new season to be animated.

I will update the article next month if something has changed. In the meantime so you can check the same analysis I have done for other series:
