Engage Kiss Season 2 is the anticipated sequel of the popular action, romance anime which first premiered in the Summer of 2022. It has been a year since the first season ended and the viewers are still wondering if it will get a new season or not.

So here’s everything we know so far regarding whether or not Engage Kiss Season 2 will happen in 2023, as well as the likely release date.

The Japanese anime Engage Kiss is an original anime produced by Aniplex and written by Fumiaki Maruto, the author of the Saekano light novel series. Tsunako, the illustrator of Date A Live light novels provided the character designs.

The story follows Shu Ogata who works as a private military contractor at Bayron City, an artificial island whose job is to neutralise demonic creatures “D-Hazards” to keep their existence a secret from the public. He is joined by Kisara, a young high school girl who is actually a demon and hundreds of years old.

Studio A-1 Pictures animated the anime’s first season, officially running for 13 episodes from July 3, 2022, to September 25, 2022, on various local networks in Japan.

Crunchyroll streamed the anime outside of Japan with both sub and dub, and it received a positive reception from viewers and critics alike. Many are praised for well-written storylines, character dynamics and unexpected plot twists.

Engage Kiss Season 2 Release Date and Countdown

Engage Kiss Season 2 Release Date and Countdown

As of May 2023, Engage Kiss Season 2 doesn’t have a release date as it is not confirmed yet. However, if a new season is confirmed, it will likely air sometime in mid-2024 or late-2024.

This is cause the first season premiered from July 2022 to September 2022 and it typically takes around 1-2 years to produce a new season.

As of now, no official announcements have been made yet, hence the readers need to keep in mind that these are just speculations.

But, keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as something official is announced. We can expect the announcement in the next few months.

Engage Kiss Season 2 Renewal Status: Confirmed or Cancelled

As of writing, Studio A-1 Pictures, the producer Aniplex, publisher Square Enix or any other member of the production committee member has not officially renewed the anime for a second season.

A lot of anime manage to get a new season right after the season finale but unfortunately, Engage Kiss wasn’t one of them.

Production Studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal and it is possible to speculate whether an anime will get a new season or not by carefully evaluating these three factors:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

I have used the same method for Eminence in Shadow, Takagi-san and World Trigger and so far it has proven to work.

So now we will examine these factors to see if Engage Kiss anime will get a sequel or not.

Is there enough source material available for Engage Kiss Season 2?

Engage Kiss Season 2 Source Material status: fortunately source material should not be a problem
Engage Kiss Season 2 Source Material status: fortunately source material should not be a problem

There are two main types of anime when it comes to source material: those based on existing material like manga, light novels or video games, and those that are completely original. Code Geass, Darling in the Franxx, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Kill la Kill, FLCL, and Cowboy Bebop are popular examples of original anime.

One of the key advantages of producing original anime is that it doesn’t rely on the availability of source material in order to continue. If an original anime can generate enough profit, it can easily be greenlit for a second season, as long as the staff members are willing to return.

Recent examples of successful original anime include Lycoris Recoil and SK8 the Infinity, which were renewed for a sequel project after a successful run.

Original anime projects also provide creators with enough flexibility to bring back series that had concluded, such as Code Geass which is getting a new anime sequel despite its original controversial ending (which was changed in the alternative reality movie Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection) and the Rebuild of Evangelion which brings back our favourite depressed and traumatized characters from the original series with a new teenage pilot and more christen etymology.

In conclusion with Original anime, you don’t have to worry about source material which is good news for the fans of Engage Kiss.

Moreover, with Engage Kiss, the team doesn’t even have to think too hard, as they can easily adapt the story from the upcoming mobile game “Engage Kill,” which officially acts as a sequel to the anime series.

The game was announced on April 24, 2022, and released in Japan on March 1, 2023, so the Engage Kiss team has plenty of options to explore.

Conclusion: Lack of source material shouldn’t be a problem for the series. We can only hope that the anime managed to make its money back.

If it has, chances are high that it will be renewed in the next year or so. Let’s see how the series is performing in terms of profitability.

Sales and Profitability

Engage Kiss sales and profit

Before we proceed, it’s important to understand that most of the anime we watch today are created primarily to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case light novel).

However, in the case of Engage Kiss, the primary objective was to generate excitement for the mobile game Engage Kill, a marketing tactic that gacha games have been using for quite some time. Takt.op Destiny and Smile of the Arsnotoria are two excellent examples of this.

As a result, the only way for these anime projects to secure another season is either through an unexpected surge in profit from home video sales or by garnering more publicity for the producers than they originally anticipated.

So let’s take a look at Blu-ray sales.

While Blu-rays and DVDs are no longer key players in determining anime success as they used to be back in the 2010s, they are still a great tool to understand a show’s popularity among the general Japanese audience. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 3,000, a second season would be promising.

As for Engage Kiss, the situation looks promising.

The first Blu-ray Volume of Engage Kiss opened at 1,343 units in the first week, followed by 1,283 for the second volume. The third volume ranked fourth on the sales chart and managed to sell 1,275 copies, while the fourth volume debuted in fifth place, selling 1,238 copies. Overall, the total sales of 6,200 copies surpassed our expectations by twofold.

Conclusion: The series has certainly made a lot of money since the anime debuted, so profitability shouldn’t stand in the way of a sequel either.

The first season has proven to be financially successful by increasing the manga sales count and bringing in even more money through Blu-ray, merchandise, and overseas licensing.

Therefore, the production committee can now be sure to make enough money from its next project.

Popularity in Japan and the West

The anime “Engage Kiss” was quite popular in Japan. Following the release of the anime the series managed to inspire a manga adaptation by Itachi which began publication in March 1, 2023.

The anime’s debut in Japan was highly anticipated, and it quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the Summer 2022 season. It ranked top on several streaming websites, including the D-Anime Store and AbemaTV and was one of the most-talked shows on the internet.

On NicoVideo, Japan’s largest hosting site which is their version of YouTube, the premiere episode received over 190k views and 12k comments outperforming other series which aired alongside it like Black Summoner, Vermail in Gold, and My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex.

Overseas popularity

The debut run of Engage Kiss anime received a positive reception from fans in the West, with many viewers and critics praising it for being even better than the source material in some aspects.

The series has garnered positive reviews from viewers around the world, earning a decent score of 6.8 on MyAnimeList and ranking at #1088 in popularity, but with a large following of more than 203k members in its MAL group.

It has also received an average score of 6.8/10 on IMDb and a 67% approval rating on AniList. This shows that the show’s popularity is very high even though it is a young series.

Engage Kill the Sequel Mobile Game

Engage Kill the Sequel Mobile Game key visual

Engage Kill is the sequel mobile game developed and published by Square Enix which went live on March 1, 2023.

The game features a new original character as one of the main characters, named Chloe Tang, voiced by Arisa Kori.

The game is currently only available in Japan yet and has received over 100k downloads over Google Play Store with a rating of 3.5/5.

In conclusion, the series gained a significant following in both Japan and the West and generated a ton of revenue from merchandise sales, indicating that it has a strong and loyal fanbase.

With no trouble with expanding source material and the potential to make even more sales, it is inevitable that Engage Kiss Season 2 will be announced soon. It is no longer a question of if it will get a new season, but when it will get a new season.

What will happen in Engage Kiss Season 2?

If the anime manages to get a new season then they most likely will use the story of Engage Kill as the baseline.

Engage Kill takes place after a certain “major incident” is resolved by Shu and Kisara, resulting in new Private Military Companies appearing in Bayron City. The protagonist establishes the Rising Sun Military Company and seeks to put a stop to tragedies and to also deal with the curse that has been inflicted on them.

The Rising Sun Military Company members include the inhumanly strong Chloe and the clerk Shiho Takenouchi (Minami Tsuda). Others include Aoi Kotobuki (Yukiyo Fujii), who has experience serving in a North American PMC; the agile Emilio Romero Alvarez (Toshiki Masuda), who is well-acquainted with Bayron City’s layout and going-ons; and Noel (Emiri Iwai), an unsociable half-American half-Indian genius who has an AI-equipped drone called Humpty (Chikano Ibuki).

Engage Kiss Season 2 Trailer

There is no trailer for Engage Kiss Season 2 available yet to watch, but we will update this page if one gets released on their official youtube channel.

On the other hand, here’s a trailer for the first season, which you should watch to recall how memorable the previous one was.

Final Words !!

In summary, there is a good chance that Engage Kiss Season 2 will happen. If that is the case, we should hear some news about it this year. But don’t expect the release date for the second season to be before 2024 since it takes time for a new season to be animated.

I will update the article next month if something has changed. In the meantime so you can check the same analysis I have done for other series:
