Genshin Impact has gained global popularity since its global release last September.

The game offers heaps of playable content, with the open world of Teyvat holding lore and treasure waiting to be uncovered. As players take the Traveler through their journey to find their lost sibling, they often find little novelties that the game has to offer. One of the most interesting aspects of the game is the world bosses who gives the talent level materials for our characters. One such world boss is Azhdaha who has become even more famous after the recent lore reveals in Enkanomiya.

Azhdaha is the Earth Dragon and Overlord of Geovishaps who once was a close friend of Geo Archon Zhongli and assisted him during the Archon War. Unfortunately, he went berserk due to erosion and continuous exploitation of resources at chasm by Humans. He broke his promise with Morax and was sealed in.

To appreciate his amazing lore along with the work that went behind the scenes of production here are some lesser-known facts about Azhdaha, the Dragon Lord.

1. Based on Iranian Mythology

Azhdaha-Genshin-Impact

Azhdaha’s name is derived from the old Persian mythology “Azhi Dahāka” which is roughly equivalent to Dragon but is still considered a snake. The name was the initial inspiration for his entire concept, and further subsequent design and lore details revolved around the meaning of this name.

In most Ancient Mythologies Azhi Dahaka is considered an enormous, and sinistral creature that they grew too large and terrorized people on land, so God imprisoned him (in some cases under mountain, or sea), where he continued to grow and even grew. However Azhi dahaka’s imprisonment would only be temporary; at the world’s end, he will break free bringing demonic mischief. From time to time, his furious attempts to escape causes an earthquake.

2. Azhdaha’s design is based on various animals

For Azhdaha design, the Genshin Impact development team’s main motto was to avoid the mainstream dragon designs of west and east, i.e Dvalin’s and Zhongli’s Dragon form respectively. So they went with a crocodile-like dragon and took further inspiration from other animals including the Alligator snapping Turtle for drawing the general outline design and Komodo Dragon’s movement for its limbs. They also took inspiration from Stegosaurus for his curved long tail, round shape and thick limbs.

3. Is a lot bigger than he appears

Azhdaha is a lot bigger than he appears in the game due to technical limitations. It is mentioned in the description of the weapon “unforged” that he is so big that he would cause earthquakes just by the slightest movements or turning side during sleep. The Dragon-Queller tree at Nantianmen is just the tip of his tail, so now you can estimate how big he truly is.

4. Is the original Dragon of Earth

Azhdaha is believed to be one of the Seven Sovereigns with many evidence pointing towards him being one of the original seven since the times of battle against The Primordial God.

The first evidence is Jiu’s dialogue during Zhongli’s Story Quest II- No Mere Stone where she says, “So here lies the wisdom of the gods? Destroy all deemed redundant, enlist tyrants to ravage the wilderness! Humans… They care only about history since the dawn of the age of mankind…”. This shows that Azhdaha knows of the time before humanity existed in Teyvat, which was an era long ago before Phanes arrived and the Dragons and Vishaps ruled the lands and oceans.

Moreover, Dragon Lord’s Crown and Bloodjade Branch, as well as Azhdaha’s Chinese name, refer to him as the “Dragon Lord” or “Dragon King”, titles both used to refer to the Seven Sovereigns.

Zhongli’s act of gifting eyes to Azhdaha is a reference to the popular Chinese idiom 画龙点睛 Hua long Dian Jing “to draw a dragon and dot the eyes” which means adding the final touch to improve or complete something.

It is derived from a story from Zhang’s “The Volumes of classic Paintings”. It tells the tale of a young boy who had a talent for drawing dragons. His dragons would come to life once he would finish drawing the eyes by painting black dots for the pupils, but would otherwise stay merely as paintings.

7. Special Dialogue depending on party composition

Azhdaha is the first domain boss to have a special dialogue depending on party composition. starting with a unique intro dialogue and ending outro dialogue if Zhongli is in the party.

In a party without Zhongli, he says “You overstep your mortal authority” and with Zhongli, he says, “It is time Morax, we settle this now!”.
