Last year, a new anime series titled Gleipnir stunned everyone with its brilliant performance. It is definitely one of the best ecchi-action series of the previous year and the season finale left the fans crying out for more, and now they’re demanding to see Gleipnir Season 2. The creators already teased it several times, but the official announcement is yet to come. So, will its sequel ever make it to the screens? Keep reading to know.

Gleipnir is a popular psychological-mystery, action manga which centres around a bunch of characters (mostly Highschoolers) who have supernatural powers. The story is written by Sun Takeda, which Studio Pine Jam adapted it into a 13-episode television anime which aired exclusively on Tokyo MX starting from April 5, 2020. Funimation licensed the English sub release which helped boost its popularity in the west leading to the localisation of manga in France, the US, Spain and many other countries.

Will there be Gleipnir Season 2?

At the time of writing, Studio Pine Jam or publisher Kodansha or any other member of the production committee has not yet renewed the anime for a second season.

The anime’s first season was completed on June 28, 2020, and since then many animes have renewed for a second season after the first season finale. Unfortunately, Gleipnir is not one of these anime.

However, considering the release date of the first season of Gleipnir, it is quite early for a new season’s approval. Official news is limited at this stage, but it is possible to speculate about a second season under three key factors which are:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

Now we will do an in-depth examination of each of these three factors starting with the source material.

Is there enough material available for Gleipnir Season 2?

Today most of the anime we watch are adapted from an already existing source material which can be manga, light novels, games and such.

In the case of Gleipnir, the source material is Manga. Now we have to check how many volumes are currently available and how many of them have been adapted in the previous season and if the series is still ongoing.

The original manga written by Sun Takeda in Kodansha’s Young Magazine the 3rd is still ongoing. It started serialization in 2015 and as of the latest 10 volumes have been published. The first season of the anime covered up to volume 4, leaving behind 6 volumes of content available to use.

Conclusion: Currently 6 volumes are available to be adapted, so there is enough source material available for another season. The series is still ongoing, so that’s a big plus for a sequel chance as well.

Sales and Popularity

In this section, we will see if the anime was even profitable for the production committee or failed to even cover the production costs. For this, we will analyse its Blu-ray, DVD and manga sales.

Gleipnir Season 1 Key Visual
Gleipnir Season 1 Key Visual

Before moving ahead you will need to understand that most of the anime today created are mostly produced to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case a manga). Sales generated through the sales of the light novel and related merchandise are their main source of income and the rest is treated as a side income in the form of advertiser fees, online streaming licencing, and Blu-ray.

Generally, a 12-episode anime television series usually takes about $ 3,000,000 to produce.

As of the last reported number, Gleipnir has 500,000 copies in circulation. The numbers have increased quite a bit since the anime has aired ranking multiple volumes of it in Oricon’s Top 500 Selling manga chart.

On average a manga usually having 100,000- 400,000 copies in circulation is considered good, so it is doing better than average in that regard increasing our chances of season 2.

Gleipnir Blu-ray Sales

Disc sales are an important criterion for anime creators to earn financial income. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 5,000, a second season would be pretty promising.

In the case of Gleipnir, the Blu-ray DVD sales aren’t looking quite promising. As reported by SomeAniThing.com, the first Blu-ray volume of Gleipnir only sold 163 copies. The second and third volume sold so poorly that they didn’t even rank.

Gleipnir Season 1 Blu-ray/ DVD Units Sales

That’s not a hopeless sales figure, and it may still provide hope for a second season considering there is also growing streaming and merch money coming from domestic and overseas companies like Crunchyroll, BiliBli in 2021.

Conclusion: the overall sales are not that amazing but are decent enough to get a second season.

Popularity of the series in Japan and in west

In this section, we will take a look at how popular this series is and how much the anime boosted its popularity. To do that, we will look at its official social media handles, MyAnimeList and other rankings, and how successful the source material is.

Source Material – Manga

The anime series is crazy popular and got a tremendous response from everyone. It made a lot of fans in a very short time and received great reviews from them as well. The show’s premise is quite unique as it is not just an ordinary fantasy anime that has useless violence in a game world. Everything in this show happened in the real world. Besides, it has some really intense action scenes and great characters. As a result, the show became a blockbuster.

The manga is so also quite popular in Japan for a series published in a Monthly Magazine. Its sales record is quite good and has sold an average of 50k copies per volume.

Social Media

Their official Twitter handle has about 16k followers and is regularly updated from time to time. This directly shows how popular the series is between the Japanese audience who is the demographically targeted audience for its manga and Blu-rays sales who accounts for almost 40% of revenue generated. In comparison twitter account of “Let’s make a mug too” by Nippon animation only has 12.5k followers and they already have a second season in work.

Rankings

On MyAnimeList, the Gleipnir anime is ranked at #3668 with a rating of 7.02 with about 142k members. Meanwhile, the manga itself is ranked at #6487 with a rating of 7.09 with 90k members. On IMBD the series had received a rating of 6.9 by 963 users.

Meanwhile, in Japan, the series was one the most watched anime of the Spring 2020 season ranking high on multiple streaming websites such as the D-Anime Store, AbemaTv. On NicoVideo, Japan’s own YouTube and the biggest video hosting site, the first episode received a total of 160k views with 13k comments and the last episode reached 65k views 6k comments.

The above numbers clearly indicate how successful and popular this show actually is. The great thing is that the production has all the required source material they need to make Gleipnir Season 2. Also, the demand to see its sequel is at its peak now. So, the makers will likely give this show its much deserving green light very soon. They might even announce it this very year.

Conclusion: while the series failed to do much in terms of manga and blu-ray sales the anime itself was watched by thousands and was fairly popular in both Japan and overseas so it won’t have any problem getting a second season.
