HigeHiro Season 2: Release Date, Plot, Trailer, Renewal Status, and Everything Else We Know So Far

Published

Higehiro Season 2 is the anticipated sequel of the popular slice-of-life, drama anime which first premiered in Spring 2021. It has been a few months since the first season ended and fans are already desperate for its second installment. The anime featured a down-to-earth relationship between the runaway Highschool girl Sayu and office worker Yoshida who lets her stay at his home which touched the hearts of millions of people through its beautifully written story. So, when will viewers be able to see more of this show? Here is everything is to know:

The Japanese Anime series Hige wo Soru short for HigeHiro: I shaved, then I bought a High Girl Home is an adaptation of novel series written by Shimesaba of the same name. The studio Project No. 9 adapted the novels into anime which ran for 13 episodes starting from April 5, 2021, to June 28, 2021. Crunchyroll and Muse Asia licenced the show in North America and Asia and was highly praised by the audience.

Will there be a second season of Higehiro?

At the time of writing, Project No. 9, publisher Kadokawa or any other member of the production committee has not yet renewed the anime for a second season. A lot of anime manage to get a season 2 right after the first season finale but unfortunately, Higehiro wasn’t one of them.

Moreover, anime sometimes can take years to get renewed for a new season since the decision depends on various factors. Luckily, it is possible to evaluate whether it will have a new season under some main factors which are:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

Let’s have a look:

Is there enough material available for I Shaved, then bought home a Highschool Girl Season 2?

The original light novel by Shimesaba published by Kadokawa under their Sneaker Bunko imprint has already ended. The novel first began serialization on Kadokawa’s online publishing website Kakuyomu in March 2017 and ended on June 1, 2021, with the release of the fifth Volume. Moreover, the first season of anime adapted all the novels and it doesn’t seem like it won’t continue either. So unfortunately there is no material left to be used for season 2.

However, the author has confirmed that she is writing a new epilogue novel titled “Hige wo Soru: Another Side Story” which takes place several years later where Yoshida will meet with a grown-up Sayu. The novel main focus will be on Yuzuha Mishima and Airi Gotou.

“In the years leading up to the reunion of Sayu and Yoshida, there were various things that happened between Yoshida and Mishima, as well as between Yoshida and Gotou,” Shimesaba tweeted. “I will be writing about those ‘various things’ as a spin-off work, so please wait for further news! I’m really glad to be able to put a period in the story of Mishima and Gotou!”

Now the thing is that the Higehiro novels are very popular in Japan and if the epilogue novels manages to retain good sales then there is a chance it might be adapted into an additional episode as an OVA or a full spin-off series similar to how Oregairu’s Epilogue novel is getting an anime after the success of final season along with a spin-off project focusing on a different love interest.

Moreover, we also have the spin-off manga “Hige o Soru. Soshite Joshi Kōsei o Hirou. Each Stories” by Baramatsu Hitomi which has a very laidback setting and shows the everyday life of Sayu and other characters without touching the depressing parts from the original novel.

Conclusion: While season 2 isn’t possible as the novels have already ended and all the content has been adapted, we still might be able to get an OVA episode or spin-off anime series.

Novels and Blu-ray Sales Record

Before moving ahead you will need to understand that most of the anime today created are mostly produced to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case a light novel). Sales generated through the sales of the light novel and merch are their main source of income and the rest is treated as a side income in the form of advertiser fees, online streaming licencing, and Blu-ray.

Generally, a 12-episode anime television series usually takes about $ 3,000,000 to produce.

As of the latest, Hige wo Soru has a total of 2 million copies in circulation. The novel series is insanely popular in Japan and numbers have increased two-fold since the anime aired which is good news for a sequel.

On the other hand, the Blu-ray/ DVD Discs also is selling well. The first volume BD which was released in June 2021 sold 1,759 copies in its first week. The second volume which was released two weeks later sold 2173 Copies, more than the first one which is a rare sight to see.

Conclusion: the first season has proven to be financially successful by increasing the novel sales count and bringing in even more money through Blu-ray, Merchs and overseas licensing. So the production committee can be now sure to make enough money from its next project.

Popularity in Japan and West

The Higehiro light novel was already quite popular in Japan and its popularity has surged after the anime aired. The light novel series and manga adaptation have a total of more than 2 million copies in circulation, including digital copies. The series also appeared at 4th in the Bunkobon edition of Takarajimasha’s annual light novel guide book Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! in 2019. Appearing in Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! the annual listing is the biggest honour a series can ever get. Multiple volumes of it has ranked on Oricon’s Best Selling Light Novels.

In Japan, the anime’s debut was one the most-watched show of the Spring 2021 season ranking top on multiple streaming websites such as the D-Anime Store, AbemaTv. On NicoVideo, Japan’s own YouTube and the biggest hosting site, the premiere episode received a total of 200k views with over 19k comments.

Overseas Popularity

At the time of writing, the show has a good score of 7.39 on MyAnimeList. Not only that, but it also has more than 390K viewers in its group and is ranked at #4397 on the same platform. These numbers clearly indicate the success of the anime’s first installment.

In conclusion, the series is quite popular in Japan and the West. Moreover, the series made tons of money from merch sales, so it won’t take a long time to get a new season. The only problem is the lack of source material but we do have alternatives, so if the producers are interested then we might be able to get a sequel very soon.

Sayu – Hige wo Soru

HigeHiro 2 Release date

Hige wo Soru is yet to be officially renewed for season 2, but if it does get a new season, then it most likely will air in late 2023 since season 1 aired from April 3 to June 19, 2021, and it usually takes around 1-2 years to create a new season and we also don’t have enough source material available yet.

As of now, no official announcements have been made yet, hence the readers need to keep in mind that these are just speculations. But, keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as something official is announced. We can expect the announcement in the next few months.
