Crunchyroll streamed the anime outside of Japan with both sub and dub, and it received a positive reception from viewers and critics alike. Many liked its fresh take on the isekai genre and the growing villainess subgenre.

Overall it was considered a hit among the harem and fantasy fans.

This is cause the second season premiered from October 2022 to December 2022 and it typically takes around 1-2 years to produce a new season.

A lot of anime manage to get a new season right after the season finale but unfortunately, Akuyaku Reijou nano de Last Boss wo Kattemimashita wasn’t one of them.

Production Studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal and it is possible to speculate whether an anime will get a new season or not by carefully evaluating these three factors:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

We have used the same method for Eminence in Shadow, Takagi-san, Call of the Night and World Trigger and so far it has proven to work.

So now we will examine these factors to see if I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss anime will get a sequel or not.

Is there enough Source material available for I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss Season 2?

I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss Source Material Status: Fortunately, there is enough source material available

I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss is a direct adaptation of the light novel series penned by Sarasa Nagase with illustrations drawn by Mai Murasaki.

It started publication online as a web novel in May 2017 on the user-generated novel publishing website Shosetsuka ni Naro (Let’s Become Novelist) and was later acquired by Kadokawa who published the series in physical form.

The first volume of the light novel was released on September 1, 2017, and the latest issue came out on September 30, 2022.

total of 10 volumes have been released so far, and the light novel is still ongoing.

The first season of the anime covered 3 volumes out of 10, leaving us behind with 7 volumes which is more than enough to create not one but two more anime seasons.

This is a good sign cause this shows that the production committee considers “I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss” as a long-term investment by adapting only three volumes over 12 episodes and maintaining a perfect pace, much like what “Eminence in Shadow” and “Shadows House” did.

Rather than just treating it as just a promotional tool for the novel and trying to adapt as much as they can, resulting in an uneven story build-up, lack of character development, and inconsistent pacing, as seen in the “Genius Prince” or “Orient” anime.

Conclusion: Currently, there are 7 volumes of source material available to adapt, which is good news since the series has more than enough material for Studio Maho Film to start working on a new season right away.

Moreover, the series is still ongoing with a consistent release of new volumes, so that’s a big plus for getting a sequel.

Manga Sales and Profitability

I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss profit and sales
I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss profit and sales

Before we proceed, it’s important to understand that most of the anime we watch today are created primarily to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case manga).

Sales from the manga and related merchandise are the main source of income for the producers, while revenue from advertising fees, online streaming licensing, and Blu-ray sales are considered secondary

Typically, a 12-episode anime television series costs around $3,000,000 to produce.

Therefore, an anime has to make back this much money through merchandise sales and licensing fees to ensure a new season from the producers.

As of September 2022, I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss had reached a circulation count of 1.2 Million copies across 10 volumes.

However, do note that this count is from before the anime aired and has not been updated for 8 months now and doesn’t account for the boost it received from the anime adaptation.

Anime adaptations have been known to significantly impact the sales and popularity of their source material. This was demonstrated by the success of “How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom,” which saw a near-doubling of its sales within six months of its anime premiere along with Ao Ashi and Isekai Ojisan which saw a similar increment.

Conclusion: typically, a light novel with 500,000 to 1,000,000 copies in circulation is considered successful, so the series is performing just average in that regard.

Moreover, as we mentioned earlier, the above count hasn’t been updated for over 8 months now and does not include the boost in sales that the series received from the anime adaptation so there is a chance that the count might have crossed 2 million circulation count by now.

Blu-ray/ DVDs and other Merchandise sales

While Blu-rays and DVDs are no longer key players in determining anime success as they used to be back in the 2010s, they are still a great tool to understand a show’s popularity among the general Japanese audience. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 3,000, a second season would be promising.

As for I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss, the situation doesn’t look very promising.

The sales numbers for the first Blu-ray/DVD volume of were so low that it failed to even make it to Oricon’s Top 20 general category, selling below 1,000 copies.

However, it’s important to note that Blu-ray sales are no longer the only measure of a show’s success, as streaming fees have become a more significant factor in the industry.

Conclusion: Based on the sales numbers, it appears that I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss anime failed to make a profit for its producers through its home video release, which is not a promising sign for the show’s future.

However, it is possible that the show managed to recoup its production costs through licensing fees and merchandise sales, so there may still be hope for its continuation.

Popularity in Japan and the West

I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss light novel was already quite popular in Japan prior to the anime’s release, and its popularity has surged even further since then as evidenced by its impressive 1.2 million circulation count.

The series initially started off as a web novel, but with its increasing popularity, it was acquired by the largest light novel publisher in Japan, Kadokawa to be revised and published with illustrations.

With even more popularity, it was adapted into a manga by Anko Yuzu in June 2018 and has been collected into three volumes.

The anime’s debut in Japan was highly anticipated, and it quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the Fall 2022 season. It ranked top on several streaming websites, including the D-Anime Store and AbemaTV and was one of the most-talked shows on the internet.

On NicoVideo, Japan’s largest hosting site which is their version of YouTube, the premiere episode received over 138k views and 12k comments quite more than its competitors which aired alongside it like Beast Tamer, Love Flops More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers.

Overseas popularity

The debut run of the Akuyaku Reijou nano de Last Boss wo Kattemimashita anime received a positive reception from fans in the West, with many viewers and critics praising it for being even better than the source material in some aspects.

The series has garnered positive reviews from viewers around the world, earning a good score of 7.2 on MyAnimeList and ranking at #1531 in popularity, with more than 135k members in its MAL group.

It has also received a decent score of 6.8/10 on IMDb and a 72% approval rating on AniList. This shows that the show’s popularity is very high even though it is a young series.

In conclusion, the series gained a significant following in both Japan and the West and generated a ton of revenue from merchandise sales, indicating that it has a strong and loyal fanbase.

With enough source material and the potential to make even more sales, it is inevitable that I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss Season 2 will be announced soon. It is no longer a question of if it will get a new season, but when it will get a new season.

What will happen in season 2 of I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss?

Since the first season covered three volumes, the next season of I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss will begin with volume 4 of the light novel.

Yen Press, the English distributor of the series describes the contents of volume 4 as such:

“Aileen had set off on what was supposed to be a diplomatic mission to improve relations with the Kingdom of Ashmael and its Holy King—so how did she end up in his harem?! What’s worse, Holy King Ashmael is the final boss from the third game in the series, and he’s immune to Claude’s magic. Now that it’s come to this, is Aileen’s only choice to romance the Holy King?”

Final Words !!
