Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is the anticipated sequel of the popular shounen-action anime which first premiered in Fall 2020. It has been a few months since the first season ended and the viewers are already desperate for its second instalment. So, when will viewers be able to see more of this show? Here is everything is to know:

The Japanese anime “Jujutsu Kaisen” is an adaptation of the manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. Studio MAPPA adapted the popular manga into a Television anime which ran for 24 episodes from October 3, 2020, to March 27, 2021, on various Japanese TV channels. Crunchyroll licensed the show in North America and Europe and was highly praised by the audience for its amazing character writing and gripping story.

Will there be a second season of Jujutsu Kaisen?

At the time of writing, MAPPA, publisher Shueisha or any other member of the production committee has not yet renewed the anime for a second season. A lot of anime manages to get a season 2 right after the first season finale but unfortunately, Jujutsu Kaisen wasn’t one of them.

Moreover, anime sometimes can take years to get renewed for a new season since the decision depends on various factors. Luckily, it is possible to evaluate whether it will have a new season under some main factors which are:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

Let’s have a look:

Is there enough material available for Second Season of Jujutsu Kaisen?

The original manga by Gege is published by Shueisha under their Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine which first began serialization on March 5, 2018, and so far 17 compiled volumes have been released with a new one releasing every 3-4 months on average. The first season of anime adapted the first 8 volumes and ended on the 63rd chapter with the Death’ Painting Arc.

Conclusion: Currently there are 9 volumes of content available to adapt which is more than enough for another 24 episodes seasons. Moreover, the series is still ongoing with the consistent release of new volumes, so that’s a big plus for getting a sequel.

Manga Sales

Before moving ahead you will need to understand that most of the anime today created are mostly produced to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case a manga). Sales generated through the sales of the manga volumes and merch are their main source of income and the rest is treated as a side income in the form of advertiser fees, online streaming licencing, and Blu-ray.

Generally, a 24-episode anime television series usually takes about $ 6,000,000 to produce.

The Jujutsu Kaisen manga dominated the manga sales chart all year round and still continues to do so. It was the fifth highest-selling manga of 2020 and became the second highest-selling manga in the first half of 2021 right between Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Tokyo Revengers. As of the latest, the manga had over 55 million copies in circulation with each volume selling over 1 million copies. The series so far has been reprinted multiple times but it sells out every time and the publisher is still struggling to meet the demands.

On average a manga usually having 2,000,000- 5,000,000 copies in circulation is seen as a good scene, so it is doing well in that regard with such amazing sales numbers.

Blu-ray and BD Disc Sales

Disc sales are an important criterion for anime creators to earn financial income. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 5,000, a second season would be pretty promising.

The Jujutsu Kaisen Blu-ray/ DVD Discs also is selling amazingly well. The first volume BD which was released in August 2021 sold 22,701 copies in its first week. The second BD volume which was released 2 weeks which about sold 21,271 copies in the first week. The third volume sold 25060 units and the fourth had the best sale record with over 23753 copies sold.

With eight volumes in total released, Jujutsu Kaisen remains consistent with copies sold in its first weeks, except Volume 7 which saw numbers dropping below 20,000 copies for both sales of its Blu-rays and DVDs. The highest debut sales belongs to Volume 3 where it reported 25,060 copies sold in the week of its release. Volume 8 performs slightly better than sales of Volume 7, improving as much as 9.18% debut-to-debut as it ends the week with 20,405 copies sold.

The title witnesses a total of 173,830 copies sold which is quite impressive, considering there is also growing streaming and merch money coming from domestic and overseas companies like HiDive, BiliBli, in 2021.

Conclusion: the series certainly has made a lot of money since the anime has debuted, so profitability shouldn’t stand in the way of a sequel either. And I don’t see Shueisha and the production committee of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 losing money unless the popularity drops for the franchise.

Popularity in Japan and West

The Jujutsu Kaisen series was already quite popular in Japan and its popularity has exploded after the anime aired. Back in October 2020, the anime premiered the manga had around 10 million copies in circulation. By January 2021 the number almost doubled to 20 million copies and just a week later with the release of volume 16 the numbers increased to 26 million copies. On October 4, 2021, it was reported that the manga has reached 55 million copies of circulation.

With this Jujutsu Kaisen became the second best selling manga of 2021 with over 23 million copies sold this year.

It was ranked 1st on the “Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics” by the Honya Club website in 2019. It also won the 3rd annual Tsutaya Comic Awards in 2019.

In Japan, the anime’s debut was one the most-watched show of the Spring 2021 season ranking top on multiple streaming websites such as the D-Anime Store, AbemaTv. On NicoVideo, Japan’s own YouTube and the biggest hosting site, the premiere episode received a total of 608k views with over 35k comments.

Overseas Popularity

On MyAnimeList, the Tokyo Revengers anime is ranked at #39 with a rating of 8.73 with about 889k members. Meanwhile, its manga itself is ranked at #97 with a rating of 8.85 with 89k members. On IMBD the series had received a rating of 8.7 by 32k users.

The above numbers indicate how successful and popular this show is. The great thing is that the production has all the required source material they need to make Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. Also, the demand to see its sequel is at its peak now. So, the makers will likely give this show its much deserving green light very soon. They might even announce it this very year.
