Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2 is the anticipated sequel of the medical-isekai anime which recently ended and fans are already up with the demands for a second season.

So here’s everything we know so far regarding whether or not Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2 will happen in 2023, as well as the likely release date.

The Japanese anime Parallel World Pharmacy also known as “Isekai Yakkyoku” in Japanese is an adaptation of the light novel series written by Liz Takayama and illustrated by Keepout.

The story follows Kanji Yakutani, a Japanese medical researcher who dies from overwork and is reincarnated in a fantasy world. He discovers that he has been granted a divine blessing from Panactheos, the God of Medicine and decides to revolutionize the new world’s medical advancement and make treatment affordable for common folks.

Studio Diomedéa animated the anime’s first season, officially running for 12 episodes from July 10, 2022, to September 25, 2022, on various local networks in Japan.

Crunchyroll streamed the anime outside of Japan with both sub and dub, and it received a positive reception from viewers and critics alike. Many praised it for its relaxing and wholesome nature and its refreshing take on the isekai genre.

Medical Practitioners also appreciated the story for its accurate portrayal of pharmaceutical practices, which is due to the fact that the author, Liz Takayama, is a real-life pharmacist.

Isekai Yakkyoku Family

As of May 2023, Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2 doesn’t have a release date as it is not confirmed yet. However, if a new season is confirmed, it will likely air sometime in mid-2024 or late-2024.

This is cause the first season premiered from July 2022 to September 2022 and it typically takes around 1-2 years to produce a new season.

As of now, no official announcements have been made yet, hence the readers need to keep in mind that these are just speculations.

But, keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as something official is announced. We can expect the announcement in the next few months.

Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2 Renewal Status: Confirmed or Cancelled

As of writing, Studio Diomedéa, the publisher Media Factory, or any other member of the production committee member has not officially renewed the anime for a second season.

A lot of anime manage to get a new season right after the season finale but unfortunately, Parallel World Pharmacy wasn’t one of them.

Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2Yet to be announced

Production Studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal and it is possible to speculate whether an anime will get a new season or not by carefully evaluating these three factors:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

I have used the same method for Eminence in Shadow, Takagi-san and World Trigger and so far it has proven to work.

So now we will examine these factors to see if Parallel World Pharmacy anime will get a sequel or not.

Is there enough source material available for Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2?

Parallel World Pharmacy source material status
Campfire Cooking in Another World has more than enough source material to create three more anime seasons

Parallel World Pharmacy anime is based on the light novel series written by Liz Takayama with illustrations drawn by Keepout.

It first started publication on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō (Let’s Become Novelist) in July 2015.

It was later acquired by Media Factory who published the series in physical form with illustrations.

The first volume in the novel series was released on January 25, 2016, and the latest issue came out on December 23, 2022.

A total of nine volumes have been released so far, and the light novel is still ongoing.

The first season of the anime covered 2 volumes out of 9 volumes leaving us behind with more than 7 volumes of content which is more than enough material to create not only one but two more anime seasons. So those who are interested in continuing the novels after the anime can start from volume 3 onwards.

Conclusion: Currently, there are 7 volumes of source material available to adapt, which is good news since the series has more than enough material for Studio Diomedéa to start working on a new season right away.

Moreover, the series is still ongoing with a consistent release of new volumes, so that’s a big plus for getting a sequel.

Also, this shows that the production committee considers “Parallel World Pharmacy” as a long-term investment by adapting only two volumes over 12 episodes and maintaining a perfect pace, much like what “Eminence in Shadow”, “Camping Cooking in another world” and “Magical Revolution” did.

Rather than treating it as just a promotional tool for the novel and trying to adapt too much material resulting in an uneven story build-up, lack of character development, and inconsistent pacing, as seen in the “Genius Prince” anime.

This indicates that the production team was already considering renewing the second season during its planning stage. Now, the only thing that stands in its way is its profitability.

If the anime manages to make its money back, it will almost certainly be renewed within the next year or so. Let’s see how the series is performing in terms of profitability.

Light Novel Sales and Profitability

Parallel World Pharmacy sales and profit

Before we proceed, it’s important to understand that most of the anime we watch today are created primarily to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case light novel).

Sales from the light novel and related merchandise are the main source of income for the producers, while revenue from advertising fees, online streaming licensing, and Blu-ray sales are considered secondary

Typically, a 12-episode anime television series costs around $3,000,000 to produce.

Therefore, an anime has to make back this much money through merchandise sales and licensing fees to ensure a new season from the producers.

As of July 2021, the circulation count for Parallel World Pharmacy had reached 2.3 million copies across the light novel, manga, and digital downloads, with 1.2 million coming from the manga adaptation.

As of January 2023, the cumulative total for the manga alone had surpassed 2 million. Therefore, the circulation count of the light novel along with the manga adaptation and digital downloads might have reached 4 million and above, considering that this count is from before the anime aired and has not been updated for 22 months and doesn’t account for the boost it received from the anime adaptation.

Anime adaptations have been known to have a significant impact on the sales and popularity of their source material. This was demonstrated by the success of “How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom,” which saw a near-doubling of its sales within six months of its anime premiere and much like Ao Ashi and Isekai Ojisan.

Conclusion: typically, a light novel with 500,000 to 1,000,000 copies in circulation is considered successful, so the series is performing remarkably well in that regard.

However, as we mentioned, the above count hasn’t been updated for over 22 months now during which two new volumes were released and does not include the boost in sales that the series received from the anime adaptation so there is a chance that the count might have crossed 5 million circulation count by now.

Blu-ray/ DVDs and other Merchandise sales

While Blu-rays and DVDs are no longer key players in determining anime success as they used to be back in the 2010s, they are still a great tool to understand a show’s popularity among the general Japanese audience. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 3,000, a second season would be promising.

As for Parallel World Pharmacy, the situation doesn’t look good.

The sales numbers for the first Blu-ray/DVD volume of Parallel World Pharmacy were so low that it failed to even make it to Oricon’s Top 20 general category, selling below 1,000 copies.

However, it’s important to note that Blu-ray sales are no longer the only measure of a show’s success, as streaming fees have become a more significant factor in the industry.

Conclusion: Based on the sales numbers, it appears that the Parallel World Pharmacy anime failed to generate a profit for its producers through the home video release, which is not a promising sign for the show’s future.

However, it is possible that the show managed to recoup its production costs through licensing fees and merchandise sales, so there may still be hope for its continuation.

Popularity in Japan and the West

The light novel “Parallel World Pharmacy” was already quite popular among isekai lovers in Japan as evidenced by how It began as a web novel and gained immense popularity, which led to its adaptation into light novels.

With its increasing popularity, the series was greenlit for a manga adaptation by Sei Takano which has reached 2 million copies in circulation on its own thanks to its beautiful art and accurate depiction of medical practices making it a hit among casual readers and medical students.

The anime’s debut in Japan was highly anticipated, and it quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the Summer 2022 season. It ranked top on several streaming websites, including the D-Anime Store and AbemaTV and was one of the most-talked shows on the internet.

On NicoVideo, Japan’s largest hosting site which is their version of YouTube, the premiere episode received over 116k views and 11k comments.

Overseas popularity

The debut run of Isekai Yakkyoku anime received a positive reception from fans in the West, with many viewers and critics praising it for being even better than the source material in some aspects.

The series has garnered positive reviews from viewers around the world, earning a solid score of 7.3 on MyAnimeList and ranking at #1266 in popularity, with more than 173k members in its MAL group.

It has also received an amazing score of 7/10 on IMDb and a 73% approval rating on AniList. This shows that the show’s popularity is very high even though it is a young series.

In conclusion, the series gained a significant following in both Japan and the West and generated a ton of revenue from merchandise sales, indicating that it has a strong and loyal fanbase.

With enough source material and the potential to make even more sales, it is inevitable that Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2 will be announced soon. It is no longer a question of if it will get a new season, but when it will get a new season.

What will happen in Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2?

Since the first season covered till volume 2, the next season of Parallel World Pharmacy will begin with adapting volume 3.

Finally taking a break… or so I thought, but Falma was invited to the Imperial Pharmaceutical School as a professor, Ellen was appointed as his assistant, and Lotte became a court painter apprentice.”

Final Words !!

In summary, there is a good chance that Parallel World Pharmacy Season 2 will happen. If that is the case, we should hear some news about it this year. But don’t expect the release date for the second season to be before 2023 since it takes time for a new season to be animated.

I will update the article next month if something has changed. In the meantime so you can check the same analysis I have done for other series:
