Talentless Nana (Munou na Nana) Season 2

Talentless Nana Season 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to its previous seasons. Here is everything we know about the second season of this popular psychological thriller anime.

Talentless Nana, also known as Munou na Nana is a popular anime series based on the manga by Looseboy and Iori Furuya. Studio Bridge adapted the series into a 13-episode television anime which aired on local network channels AT-X, Tokyo MX, SUN, TVA from October 4, 2020, to December 27, 2020, and it attracted great attention when it was airing.

Its first season concluded in December 2020 and since then fans have been wondering whether the anime will return for season 2.

In case of anime the possibility of a sequel mainly depends of three factors which are:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

Now I will present the information that I examined in 3 short sections and tell you if you should expect that Munou na Nana Season 2 will get announced in 2022.

Let’s start with an in-depth examination of the source material.

What is the Plotline of the anime?

In the near future, mysterious monsters known as the “Enemies of Humanity” begin to appear, and with it so do children with supernatural powers called the “Talented”. To prepare them for the upcoming battle against these Enemies, all the Talented are sent to a school located on a deserted island, where they have all their daily needs provided for until they graduate and communication with the outside world is forbidden.

One day, a new student named Nana Hiiragi arrives at the school. Her friendly and cheerful personality lets her quickly make friends with the class. In reality, however, Nana is a Talentless government assassin who has been dispatched to kill the Talented, whom the government deems to be the true Enemies of Humanity.

Is there enough material available for Talentless Nana Season 2?

Today most of the anime are adapted from an already existing source material in the form of manga, light novel, games and such.

In the case of Talentless Nana, the source material is Manga. Now we have to check how many volumes are currently available and how many of them have been adapted in the previous season and if the series is still ongoing.

Talentless Nana is published in Square Enix’s shounen manga magazine Monthy Shounen Gangan since May 12, 2016. As of May 2021, there are eight volumes of Munou na Nana released in Japan. The manga series by Looseboy, Iori is still ongoing and a new volume is released every 7-8 months on average with the last one released on October 12, 2020. The active release of the manga is good news for the anime series.

The first season of Talentless Nana anime only covered the first four volumes leaving behind 4 volumes worth of content.

Conclusion: Currently 4 volumes are left to be adapted, so there is enough source material available for another one-cour season. The series is still ongoing, so that’s a big plus for a sequel chance as well.

Sales and Popularity

In this section, we will see if the anime was even profitable for the production committee or failed to even make-up the production costs. For this, we will analyse its Blu-ray, DVD sale and manga sales.

Before moving ahead you will need to understand that most of the anime today created are mostly produced to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case a manga). Sales generated through the sales of the light novel and merch are their main source of income and the rest is treated as a side income in the form of advertiser fees, online streaming licencing, and Blu-ray.

Generally a 12-epsiode anime television series like usually takes about $ 3,000,000 to produce.

As of the latest Talentless Nana has sold a total of 97,000 copies with 7 volumes released so far. The numbers for volume 8 are yet to be revealed. Also since the anime aired, the sales numbers have increased a bit. Moreover, its latest volume ranked in the Top 500 selling manga for 3 weeks.

On average a manga usually having 100,000- 500,000 copies in circulation is seen as a good scene, so it is doing average in that regard.

Talentless Nana Blu-ray Sales

Disc sales are an important criterion for anime creators to earn financial income. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 5,000, a second season would be pretty promising.

In the case of Talentless Nana, the Blu-ray DVD sales are not looking quite promising. As reported by SomeAniThing.com, the first Blu-ray volume of Talentless Nana only sold 163 copies. The second and third volume sold so poorly that they didn’t even rank.

Talentless Nana Blu-ray/ DVD Units Sales

That’s not a hopeless sales figure, and it may still provide hope for a second season considering there is also growing streaming and merch money coming from domestic and overseas companies like Crunchyroll, BiliBli in 2021.

Conclusion: the overall sales are not that amazing but are decent enough to get a second season.

Popularity of the series in Japan and in west

In this section, we will take a look at how popular this series is and how much the anime boosted its popularity. To do that, we will look at its official social media handles, MyAnimeList and other rankings, and how successful the source material is.

Source Material – Manga

The Talentless Nana manga is quite popular in Japan for a series published in a Monthly Magazine. Multiple volumes of it have managed to rank in the Top 500 selling manga. The first and second volume was ranked for 1 week, and third for 4 weeks. The fifth was ranked for 3 weeks, sixth for 2 weeks and latest one for 3 weeks.

Social Media

Their official Twitter handle has about 34.1k followers and is regularly updated from time to time. This directly shows how popular the series in Japan who are the demographically targeted audience for its manga and Blu-rays sales who accounts for almost 40% of revenue generated. In comparison, I am Standing on One Million Lives twitter handle has over 29k followers and have already announced a season 2.

On MyAnimeList, the Talentless Nana anime is ranked at #2512 with a rating of 7.26 with about 93k members. Meanwhile, its manga is ranked at #3566 with a rating of 7.37 with 4896 members. On IMBD the series had received a rating of 7.1 by 521 users. Meanwhile, in Japan, the series was one the most watched anime of the Fall 2020 season ranking top on multiple streaming websites such as the D-Anime Store, AbemaTv. Conclusion: while the series failed to do much in terms of manga and blu-ray sales the anime itself was watched by thousands and was fairly popular in both Japan and overseas so it won’t have any problem getting a second season.

So will There Be Talentless Nana Season 2?

No official announcement for the second season has been made as of now, but, taking into account how popular the entire series has become after the anime aired, I think Munou Na Nana Season 2 has an excellent chance of getting announced.

There is enough source material available currently and the series has made tons of money from merch sales. If you ask why it is taking so long for a sequel, it’s probably because anime studios are busy these days, including Studio Bridge, where they are booked up to the next 2-3 years and are currently busy creating the Shaman King reboot anime for Netflix. So even If the production committee did green-light a sequel in 2021 after the anime success, it would take a few years to announce next season.

Talentless Nana season 2 release date

Talentless Nana is yet to be officially renewed for season 2, but if it does get a new season, then it most likely will air in late 2022 since the season 1 aired from October 4 to December 27, 2021, and It usually takes around 1-2 years to create a new season.

As of now, no official announcements have been made yet, hence the readers need to keep in mind that these are just speculations. But, keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as something official is announced. We can expect the announcement in the next few months.

What to expect from season 2?

The next season will begin with adapting chapter 29 of the fifth volume where Kyouya’s solves all the mysteries of the Invisible Blade arc and the reason behind Sorano Fuuko action. You probably remember that Kyouya found a bloody tracksuit in Fuuko’s room. Thereafter there will be a brief introduction for Nana’ supervisor, and a new agent that sent to the island to keep Nana in check.
