Story so far in the anime

The Teacher tells Noé about the great alchemist Paracelsus who first proposed the The World Formula Theory, a theory that claims that beyond humankind’s world lies a realm wherein the entire mortal world has been replaced with formulas. Paracelsus believed that if one could rewrite the world’s constitutive formulas, it would eliminate all sicknesses and steer humankind towards happiness. He immersed himself in his work and eventually did an experiment that meddled with the World Formula, but the experiment led to an accident known as the Babel incident.

That brought all manner of calamities, from flowers with their own light to the first red-eyed humanoids. Each was a result of having their original constitutive formula rewritten. This is also the reason why airships with aerodynamic lift generators, street lights and other inventions exist, as they are powered by astermite, a mineral created by rewriting of the constitutive formula for coal. Rewriting the human’s constitutive formula led to creation of new species, the vampires.
