World Trigger Season 4 is the anticipated sequel of the popular shonen-action anime which first premiered in the Fall of 2014. It has been a year since the last season ended and the viewers are still desperately hoping for its new instalment. So, when will viewers be able to see more of this show?

Well here’s everything we know so far regarding whether or not World Trigger Season 4 will happen in 2023, as well as the likely release date.

The Japanese anime World Trigger also referred to as “WorTri” in short is an adaptation of the manga created by Daisuke Ashihara. The story takes place in Mikado City where a gate suddenly appears and Monsters called “Neighbors” emerges out of it.

Toei Animations produced the anime’s first season, officially running for 73 episodes from October 5, 2014, to April 3, 2016, on various local networks in Japan followed by a second season running from January 10, 2021, to April 4, 2021.

In Jump Festa 2021, it was officially announced that the series would receive a third season with the cast reprising their roles and Toei Animation returning to produce the series. The third season of the anime aired from October 10, 2022, to January 23, 2022, consisting of 14 episodes.

Crunchyroll and  Sentai Filmworks streamed the anime outside of Japan, and it received mixed reviews for its first season due to pacing issues and the use of original content in the adaptation.

However, the latter two seasons were well-received by viewers for their impressive animation quality, the unique blend of science fiction, action, and supernatural elements, and the complex and intricate world-building that the series presents.

Will there be a Season 4 of World Trigger?

As of writing, Studio Toei Animation, the publisher  Shueisha, or any other member of the production committee has not officially renewed the anime for a fourth season.

A lot of anime manages to get a new season right after the first season finale but unfortunately, World Trigger wasn’t one of them.

Moreover, it’s important to note that anime productions sometimes can take years to get renewed for a new season since the decision depends on various factors.

Fortunately, it is possible to speculate whether an anime will get a new season or not by carefully evaluating these three factors:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

We will now examine these factors to see if World Trigger anime will get a sequel or not.

Is there enough material available for the fourth season of World Trigger?

World Trigger Cast

World Trigger is a direct adaptation of the manga written and drawn by Daisuke Ashihara.

The manga initially started publication in Weekly Shonen Jump in February 2013, 2023 and was transferred to their monthly release magazine Jump Square in December 2018, due author’s Health complications.

The first volume of the manga was released on July 4, 2013, and the latest issue is set to come out on September 2, 2022.

A total of twenty-five volumes have been released so far, and the manga is still ongoing.

The first season of the World Trigger anime adaptation covered the manga up to chapter 120, spanning 73 episodes. The second and third seasons covered an additional 79 chapters, bringing the total adapted material to 199 chapters across 99 episodes. This leads to an average pacing of 2 chapters per episode.

As of now, 226 chapters have been released leaving 27 chapters available for adaptation, which is enough content for another 12-episode season.

Conclusion: Currently, there are 27 chapters of content available to adapt, which is good news since the studio has more than enough material for Studio Toei animations to start working on a new season right away.

Moreover, the series is still ongoing with a consistent release of new volumes, so that’s a big plus for getting a sequel.

Manga Sales and Profitability

Before we proceed, it’s important to understand that most of the anime we watch today are created primarily to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case manga).

Sales from the manga and related merchandise are the main source of income for the producers, while revenue from advertising fees, online streaming licensing, and Blu-ray sales are considered secondary

Typically, a 12-episode anime television series costs around $3,000,000 to produce.

Therefore, an anime has to make back this much money through merchandise sales and licensing fees to ensure a new season from the producers.

As of October 2021, the World Trigger has reached 15 million copies in circulation.

Conclusion: Typically, a manga with 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 copies in circulation is considered successful for a shonen manga. Therefore, World Trigger’s success is quite remarkable, with three times more copies in circulation than the expected number. This level of success is particularly impressive, especially for manga has such an inconsistent release schedule.

Moreover, the above count hasn’t been updated for over 17 months, during which time 2 new volumes were released. Also, let’s not forget the boost it received from the third season of the anime.

So, the new circulation number might be more than 20 million or even higher by now.

Blu-ray/ DVDs and other Merchandise sales

While Blu-rays and DVDs are no longer key players in determining anime success as they used to be back in the 2010s, they are still a great tool to understand a show’s popularity among the general Japanese audience. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 3,000, a second season would be promising.

As for World Trigger, the sales numbers appear to be solid so far. Prior to the premiere of season 2, World Trigger released three limited edition home discs of the anime that ran from 2014 to 2016. All three volumes debuted with over 1,000 copies sold, with total sales reaching 3,382 copies.

Moreover, the first Blu-ray volume of World Trigger season 2 debuted at #5 on the sales chart, selling 1,817 copies in its first week of sales.

While there is no reliable proof of how much the rest of the volumes sold, it is still safe to assume that the remaining three volumes also sold an average of 1,500 to 2,000 copies, bringing the total to around 7,200 units sold.

World Trigger Season 3 Volume 3 also sold a total of 1,939 copies, suggesting that season 3 also sold somewhere between 7,500 to 8,000 copies in total.

Conclusion: The series has certainly made a lot of money since the anime debuted and continues to do with its latest instalments, so profitability shouldn’t stand in the way of a sequel either.

The third season has proven to be financially successful by increasing the manga sales count and bringing in even more money through Blu-ray, merchandise, and overseas licensing.

Therefore, the production committee can now be sure to make enough money from its next project.

Popularity in Japan and the West

World Trigger manga was already popular in Japan even before the anime debuted, with multiple volumes topping Oricon’s weekly and monthly sales charts and averaging around 275,000 copies sold per volume.

In 2016, Oricon announced that World Trigger was the 20th best-selling manga of the year. On TV Asahi’s Manga Sosenkyo 2021 poll, in which 150.000 people voted for their top 100 manga series, World Trigger ranked 14th.

Despite the author’s breaks and inconsistent volume releases, fans remain loyal to the series and continues to support it wholeheartedly setting new records with each new release.

Anime’s Success

The anime series ranked 10th in the Tokyo Anime Award Festival’s top 100 TV anime series of 2016. During NHK’S top 100 anime voting, World Trigger placed 158 out of 400, tied with Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare”.

The anime’s third season debut in Japan was highly anticipated, and it quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the Winter 2022 season. It ranked top on several streaming websites, including the D-Anime Store and AbemaTV.

Overseas popularity

The series has garnered positive reviews from viewers around the world, earning a solid score of 7.5 on MyAnimeList and ranking at #1462 in popularity, with more than 390k members in its MAL group which is almost double the number of members that Sabikui Bisco has. Additionally, the latest season of the show is rated 8.29 out of ten, making it the 256th highest-rated show on the database website.

It has also received a positive score of 7.5/10 on IMDb and a 72% approval rating on AniList. This shows that the popularity of the show is very high even though it is a young series.

In conclusion, the series has gained a significant following in both Japan and the West and generated a ton of revenue from merchandise sales, indicating that it has a strong and loyal fanbase.

With enough source material and the potential to make even more sales, it is inevitable that World Trigger Season 4 will be announced. It is no longer a question of if it will get a new season, but when it will get a new season.

You can watch the season 3 trailer while you wait for the season 4 trailer to arrive.

What will happen in Season 4?

The last season adapted the story until chapter 199, so the next season will begin with adapting chapter 200 titled “Ruka Shinoda” continuing the Away Mission Test Arc.

The first episode of the fourth season will begin with Osamu and Yuma wondering whom Jin wanted them to meet. Shinoda and Sawamura arrive from HQ and bring a guest along with them: Yōtarō’s sister, Ruka Shinoda. Osamu asks why she has the surname “Shinoda” if she is Yōtarō’s sister.

Rindo explains that the situation is complicated, but Ruka puts it simply: Border’s success is due to the efforts of Yōtarō and herself, along with Karasawa’s hard work.

Osamu compares her haughtiness to that of Yuiga. Shinoda and Sawamura leave; Ruka asks Sawamura to watch after Shinoda. Cronin arrives at Tamakoma. He displays a stunt with Yōtarō that fails, but the latter is protected by being in a trion body.

Rind0 explains that the parents of Ruka and Yotaro were killed by Neighbors and that they pose as relatives of himself and Shinoda so that they can be sheltered by Border. Rindō affirms that she is indeed vital to Border.

Jin arrives at Tamakoma, and Osamu asks him if Ruka was the one to meet. Jin denies it, stating that she was just in preparation for the real one. Rata and Reghindetz prepare to leave the ship thirty minutes before sunset.
