The official website to Wit Studio’s latest anime ‘Great Pretender‘ launched a new key visual along with its first trailer and additional details regarding its cast and staff. The announcement also revealed the Great Pretender release Date.
From the team behind mega hit series like Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga, comes a brand new original anime- Great Pretender, a comedic drama between famous swindlers around the world which is scheduled to release this Summer. Have a look at the newly released visual and promotional video

New key visual
Packed with characters from left to right, the four characters shown in above visual are Masato Edamura, Rolan Thierry, Abigail Jones and Paula Dickins. Voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi, our protagonist Masato Edamura is known as Japan’s greatest swindler who makes a living through conning elder and tourists. Before his current life, he used to be honest and considerate.
Great Pretender Trailer
On Friday, Toho animation began streaming the first promotional video offering us first look the upcoming original anime. The animation in above trailer looks stellar and the designs feels fresh. Also the visuals are beautifully drawn with soundtracks which is compelling to its theme. The trailer also unviels it’s Netflix release Date which is scheduled for July 2.
Great Pretender anime plot
Netflix describes the series as:
Makoto Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler. Together with his partner Kudo, they try to trick a Frenchman in Asakusa but unexpectedly get tricked instead. However the Frenchman, whom they tried to swindle, turns out to be Laurent Thierry- a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias. Edamura is yet to find out what fate awaits him, after having engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs…!
Great Pretender anime release date
Great Pretender will premiere on July 8, 2020 on on Fuji TV’s +UItra programming block and BS Fuji. The series is listed with 23 episodes.
Also Netflix will stream the show exclusively worldwide, but it will stream in Japan ahead of the rest of the world starting from April 2. Also last year, its Episode 1 was screened at Anime expo at Los Angeles where it received a mixed response.
Studio and Staff
Hiro Kaburagi who is directing the series at Wit Studio. Meanwhile Evangelion‘s Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is in charge of character designs with Ryota Kosawa penning the scripts. Also Yutaka Yamada who is known for his work on Tokyo Ghoul and Vinland Saga is composing the music.
