Summer Time Rendering Season 2 is the anticipated sequel of the popular supernatural thriller anime which first premiered in the Summer of 2022. It has been a year since the first season ended and the viewers are still wondering if it will get a new season or not.

So here’s everything we know so far regarding whether or not Summer time Rendering Season 2 will happen in 2023, as well as the likely release date.

The Japanese anime Summer Time Rendering also known as “Sama Taimu Renda” Japanese is an adaptation of the manga series written and illustrated by Yasuki Tanaka.

The story follows Shinpei Ajiro, who returns to his hometown to attend the funeral of his childhood friend Mio. Some believe that she drowned accidentally, while others speculate that she was murdered. Determined to uncover the truth, Shinpei embarks on a journey that leads to shocking and nerve-wracking revelations about the island.

Renowned Studio OLM produced the anime’s first season, officially running for 25 episodes from April 15, 2022, to September 30, 2022, on various local networks in Japan.

Disney+ streamed the anime outside of Japan with both sub and dub, and it received a positive reception from viewers and critics alike. Many praised it for its well-thought-out supernatural murder mystery, impressive production value, and outstanding soundtracks.

Summer Time Rendering Season 2 hasn’t been confirmed to be in the works, so there’s no release date for the anime yet. Because the main plotline of the manga was completely adapted in the first season, it’s unlikely that the anime will ever return, but there’s no harm in hoping.

For the anime to continue, the studio will have to either adapt the sequel manga or create an original story.

As of now, no official announcements have been made yet, hence the readers need to keep in mind that these are just speculations.

But, keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as something official is announced. We can expect the announcement in the next few months.

Will there be a Season 2 of Summer Time Rendering?

As of writing, Studio OLM, the publisher Shueisha, or any other member of the production committee has not officially renewed the anime for a second season.

A lot of anime manage to get a new season right after the season finale but unfortunately, Sama Taimu Renda wasn’t one of them.

Production Studios consider various financial and commercial metrics before announcing a renewal and it is possible to speculate whether an anime will get a new season or not by carefully evaluating these three factors:

  • Availability of source material
  • Sales
  • Popularity

I have used the same method for Eminence in ShadowTakagi-san and World Trigger and so far it has proven to work.

So now we will examine these factors to see if Summer Time Rendering anime will get a sequel or not.

Is there enough material available for “Summer Time Rendering” Season 2?

Summer Time Rendering Anime is a direct adaptation of the manga series written by Kota Amana with illustrations drawn by Yasuki Tanaka.

It started publication on Shueisha Shonen Jump+ online manga reading website in October 2017 and ended on February 2021.

The first volume of the manga was released on February 2, 2018, and the latest volume came out on April 2, 2021.

A total of thirteen volumes have been released so far, and the manga is finished.

The first season of the Summertime Rendering anime adapted all the content from the manga, and as a result, there is no source material left to cover in a second season.

While a second season is not possible, there is still hope for a continuation of the anime in the form of Summer Time Rendering 2026. Let’s talk a look:

About Summer Time Rendering 2026

Summer Time Rendering 2026: The Room that Dreams of Murder is a one-volume spin-off manga written by Yasuki Tanaka and published on April 14, 2022. The story takes place after the events of the main series and reintroduces familiar characters Hizuru Minakata and Haine as Aunt and Niece.

The plot follows novelist Ryunosuke Nagumo and his niece, who are apartment hunting in Tokyo when they stumble upon a large, cheap apartment that happens to be haunted.

The spinoff manga has enough content to be for either a feature-length movie or a six-episode series.

Conclusion: Although a second season is not possible since all the content from the manga has already been adapted, we may still see a continuation based on the spin-off manga.

Manga Sales and Profitability

Before we proceed, it’s important to understand that most of the anime we watch today are created primarily to promote and boost the sales of its source material (in this case manga).

Sales from the manga and related merchandise are the main source of income for the producers, while revenue from advertising fees, online streaming licensing, and Blu-ray sales are considered secondary

Typically, a 12-episode anime television series costs around $3,000,000 to produce.

Therefore, an anime has to make back this much money through merchandise sales and licensing fees to ensure a new season from the producers.

As of April 2022, Summer Time Rendering had reached a circulation count of 1.7 million copies.

However, do note that this count is from before the anime aired and has not been updated for 13 months now and doesn’t account for the boost it received from the anime adaptation.

Anime adaptations have been known to have a significant impact on the sales and popularity of their source material. This was demonstrated by the success of “How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom,” which saw a near-doubling of its sales within six months of its anime premiere and Ao Ashi and Isekai Ojisan saw a similar increment

Conclusion: typically, a manga with 400,000 to 1,000,000 copies in circulation is considered successful, so the series is performing just average in that regard.

Moreover, as we mentioned earlier, the above count hasn’t been updated for over 13 months now and does not include the boost in sales that the series received from the anime adaptation so there is a chance that the count might have crossed 2.5 million circulation count by now.

Blu-ray/ DVDs and other Merchandise sales

While Blu-rays and DVDs are no longer key players in determining anime success as they used to be back in the 2010s, they are still a great tool to understand a show’s popularity among the general Japanese audience. In general, if an anime’s disc sales are over 3,000, a second season would be promising.

As for Summer time Rendering, the situation doesn’t look good.

The first Blu-ray/DVD volume of Summer time Rendering sold a total of 731 units in the first week of sales. While we don’t know how much the second sold but it is safe to assume it sold a similar amount making the combined sales for both volumes around 1500. This total figure is considered low for even today’s home video marketplace standards.

However, it’s important to note that Blu-ray sales are no longer the only measure of a show’s success, as streaming fees have become a more significant factor in the industry.

Conclusion: Based on the sales numbers, it appears that the Summer time Rendering anime failed to generate a profit for its producers through the home video release, which is not a promising sign for the show’s future.

However, it is possible that the show managed to recoup its production costs through licensing fees and merchandise sales, so there may still be hope for its continuation.

Summer time Rendering‘s Popularity in Japan and the West

The manga “Summer time Rendering” has become increasingly popular among fans of and its popularity has surged even further in Western circles following the release of the anime adaptation.

The popularity of the series has led to its adaptation into various other media formats, including a video game called Summer Time Rendering: Another Horizon, released on January 26, 2023, for consoles.

The franchise has also inspired a live-action adaptation that is currently in production and a real-life escape game. Additionally, Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of the My Hero Academia manga series, has recommended the series.

The anime’s debut in Japan was highly anticipated, and it quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the Summer 2022 season. It ranked top on several streaming websites, including the D-Anime Store and AbemaTV and was one of the most-talked shows on Twitter.

In fact, Hideo Kojima the acclaimed game developer recently tweeted about accidentally discovering the series and liking it so far. He tweeted, “I accidentally found Summer Time Rendering on Netflix, wow this is surprisingly good! Time loop x The Stolen City (Body Snatchers) in Wakayama version?!! Liked the character design, great script, drawings, and directions! I thought it was such a joke when Ushio appears but this is so sick! Ushio is challenging us so bad! So funny! I can’t stop thinking about it! And Akio is in!! Too late to notice? I’m sorry!! I watched up until Episode 10 tonight.”

Overseas popularity

Summer time Rendering’s Popularity is quite high in Japan and the West

The debut run of the Sama Taimu Renda anime adaptation received a positive reception from fans in the West, with many viewers and critics praising it for being even better than the source material in some aspects.

The series has garnered positive reviews from viewers around the world, earning an amazing score of 8.5 on MyAnimeList and ranking at #493 in popularity, but has a large with a large following of 420k members in its MAL group.

The anime has a larger fanbase than other series such as Black Summoner, Parallel World Pharmacy, and My Isekai Life which aired at the same time.

It has also received a fabulous score of 8.2/10 on IMDb and an 83% approval rating on AniList. This shows that the show’s popularity is very high even though it is a young series.

In conclusion, the series gained a significant following in both Japan and the West and generated a ton of revenue from merchandise sales, indicating that it has a strong and loyal fanbase.

The only problem is the lack of source material, but if the anime proves to be highly profitable then the producers might consider creating an anime adaptation based on the additional manga we have available.
